Arts Educator Training

CME provides a six-month training course in partnership with the University of East Anglia for creative arts practitioners working in the community (eg. music tutors, dance teachers, youth workers, support workers, artists, etc).

The course will introduce you to the techniques, skills, theories, evidence and approaches associated with learner-centred delivery through participation in creative activity.

The Arts Council is sponsoring the course in recognition of a changing professional environment for arts practitioners and a growing need for skilled arts educators.

Course Content

Working as part of a group of like-minded practitioners you will explore teaching and learning theory and practice essential elements of course curriculum design. Specific objectives will include:

  • introduction to a range of teaching strategies and methods used in creative learning activity.
  • practical opportunities to employ these strategies and methods in the field under observation.
  • examination and analysis of a range of examples of teaching and learning through participation in creative activity.
  • research (documented project, peer review, etc.) on a relevant topic of the student's choice.
  • relation of practical teaching and learning through participation in creative activity to current educational theory.
  • introduction to factors affecting a learner's ability to learn including previous educational experience, social and economic factors, disability, literacy, language and numeracy needs and other personal and psychological issues.
  • Development of students as reflexive and reflective practitioners.

The course is structured in three modules:

  • introduction to learning theories and research approaches
  • contextual practical skills development
  • a project comprising a mixture of taught and directed learning activity.

It is essential that successful applicants are working in some way as creative arts educators in order to practice and demonstrate their professional learning. Assesments have been designed to help you develop your teaching and will contribute to your teaching portfolio.
