Sing Up

sing_up.jpg Sing Up is the Music Manifesto’s National Singing Programme, developed to make sure good quality singing is at the heart of every primary-aged child’s life.

In 2007 the government announced it was going to invest £10 million in the cause, and in November 2008, made a further announcement that this figure would continue each year, running until March 2011.

CME holds one of two Area Leader contracts in the East of England and has appointed Mia Vigar, an experienced singing leader and practising musician to the post. Sing Up Area Leaders coordinate training opportunities for teachers and other professionals to gain the skills and confidence needed to sing with primary-aged children. Singing can help build bridges and strengthen communities, not to mention act as a ‘brain gym’ to work out tricky curriculum questions.

Singing is shown to improve learning, behaviour, health and confidence, and is fun. In collaboration with our Music Service partners, we are currently rolling out singing Continued Professional Development programmes across Essex, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Southend, Peterborough, Luton and Thurrock as well as Norfolk. We hope to have reached the majority of the 1,500-plus schools in the region by the end of the initiative, not to mention community groups and organisations who work with children outside mainstream education, such as travellers, refugees and those with special educational needs. Furthermore, we implement ‘workforce development’ for singing leaders and young singing leaders, strengthening the singing ethic and ensuring a lasting legacy.
