Shai

Shai, 16, Holt Youth Project

Shai, 16, left school with little hope of getting a job, due to her Aspergers - a condition which causes difficulties in social interaction. Shai, who lives in Cromer, a small town in rural Norfolk, had problems communicating her feelings and found it hard to mix with other people.

Shai got involved with CME last September at Holt Youth Project, where she was volunteering. Together with other young people attending the project, she formed a band, playing drums for the first time.

"I liked music at school,'' said Shai, "But I didn't get the chance to learn how to play anything. I've always wanted to play drums and I was surprised how quickly I picked it up.''

The band, who have yet to be named, meet at their weekly CME sessions for jamming, recording and band skills workshops. They had a go at playing different instruments and Shai learned how to read drum music.

Shai said that as well as learning about music she picked up other useful skills such as listening, teamwork and communication.

"I left school at 16 because I hated it, I felt cast out,'' she said. "Now being part of band is like being in a family. At last I have been accepted for who I am. When it all comes together it sounds really good, with everyone contributing and relying on each other.

"I'd like to continue with music if I get the opportunity - being in a band is incredible!''
